85 Flex Rating: A flex of 85 is moderately stiff for an adult, and very stiff/advanced for a youth. Boots of this flex are responsive enough for aggressive skiing but should still fit pretty comfy. Boots of this nature usually make good park/powder boots because they are more forgiving when landing jumps than a race boot, but they are responsive enough not to melt when you're skiing hard. These boots are sometimes referred to as the SPK Kid Pro, and sometimes the SPK 85. The sizes that they are available in and the flex tells us here at Level9 that this boot is primarly a MEN's boot or perhaps an expert, expert junior freerider boot. Polypropylene Shell: The PP shell really lightens up the boot, while still giving it enough rigidity to provide the skier with good response while skiing at speed. 104mm last: Comfort is key for skiers matching up to this last width. It is roomy and comfortable, making it the preferred choice for recreational skiers that demand comfort above all else. This is the boot type that most recreational skiers prefer. Mega Buckles: Instead of the standard 4 buckle system (or sometimes 3), this boot has two oversized buckles that get the same pulling power and fit, with less stuff to worry about. One buckle over the top of the foot- done, one buckle above the ankle- done... Time to start skiing. Shock Absorber Heel: An insert in the heel absorbs shock from harsh, jolting terrain, and helps cushion big air landings. Micro-adjustable aluminum buckles: These aluminum buckles can be moved to adjust for size, so if the default position of the buckle and the teeth is too wide or too narrow, you can move it until it fits. Replaceable Toe and Heel Pads: This is a must-have for skiers that don't live in ski in/ski out condos. When your ski tech tells you that you have to buy new boots because the soles are worn down too much, just laugh at him and tell him to order you a new set of sole plates. Lace-up Liner: This boot has a liner with laces that enhance the fit of the boot, and helps the liner hug the foot more like a sock than a traditional ski boot liner. The laces can be removed to give a more traditional fit.
55mm Powerstrap: A 55mm powerstrap is huge, and will be just as good if not better than having an additional buckle. All that surface area, when cinched down against your shin, will provide an extra degree of snugness. Advanced Shell Technology: The shell of this boot is described by Salomon as a 'new generation of low profile ski boots based on a Second Skin shell, Spaceframe shell profile, and Energyzer for improved fit and performance.' What Salomon is saying here in so many words is that these boots have taken technologies used in the Mission series, Falcon/Impact Series, and of course technologies used in prior SPK models. All of which combine to make a high performance, lightweight, really comfortable and responsive ski boot! Thermicfit Liner: Salomon's Thermicfit is akin to Head's HeatFit, and Langes Thermomoldable liners. Basically if you heat 'em up (either by just skiing in them--body heat, or via some other method, like a hair dryer), the liner will conform to the shape of your foot. Pretty sweet. SlickFit Liner: The inner portion of the calf and tongue of the liner are made of a 'slick' plastic/nylonish fabric to cut down on the friction between your liner and your ski sock--which of course helps when putting on and taking off the boot. |
