Ski poles are your friends. They help you maintain proper form and balance, as well as help you get across the flat spots. The only people that shouldn't use poles are kids that cannot parallel yet, true beginners, snowboarders, and park skiers that desperately need to look like snowboarders. So if you aren't one of these categories, you should be using poles.
Sizing poles is easy. Just use the ski pole Sizing chart to give you a good estimate of what length of poles you should be using.
Ideally, your arm should be parallel to the ground when you grasp the pole (with the tip up) below the basket.

There are cases when you can go longer or shorter than what the chart recommends:

  • If you are a bump skier, you should size down 2-8 inches.
  • If you want an aggressive stance for steeps and higher speed skiing, size down 2 inches.
  • If you are doing a lot of park skiing, size down 2-6 inches
  • If you Telemark, size down 2-6 inches
  • If you are powder skiing a lot, size up 2 inches.
  • If you are ski jousting, size up 4-12 inches

We have thousands of poles to choose from, and if we don't have your size, any of our poles are easy to cut to length.

Defiance Skis: Defiance Skis is an American ski company founded solely to provide high quality, durable equipment at realistic prices. It's 2016! And this is the internet! Shoppers shouldn't have to resort to a decision between renting or buying used gear, and really shouldn't have to spend $800 equipping a beginning skier! All Defiance products are covered under a Lifetime Warranty so not to worry, if anything happens that shouldn't, L9 has gotcha covered. Stay beholden to the big box ski 'sales' if you must, or Defy the Ordinary, the decision is yours and yours alone.

Ideal Target Skier: Developing Young Skier: Anywhere from first timers to advanced youth skiers, that still have a lot to learn about skiing. They might ski fast sometimes, and have a blast, but aren't comfortable with some areas of the mountain.

Composite Core: This ski features a composite core, which has a softer flex and is lighter weight than wood cores. Junior, entry level, and sometimes even women's models have this type of core to make skiing more enjoyable, and less work.

Cap Construction: The topsheet of this ski drapes over the edge to form a clean and rounded finish to the side of the ski. This style of construction adds some torsional rigidity, and helps reduce topsheet chipping when the skis hit each other.

Textured Surface: Ideal for repelling wear and tear on the skis surface. Textured ski surfaces (aka snakeskin topsheet) are rough surfaces to the ski that hide or repel scratches keep your skis look new long after they are not. Originally designed for rental skis for obvious reasons, this surface is now available on a wide variety of retail skis as well since everyone likes their skis to look nice.

Active Camber: In a world of early rise, rocker, and reverse camber, there still is a need for traditional full camber skis. The edge grip and stability is unmatched on groomed snow. This ski gets maximum edge to the snow, so it helps skiers skiing the firm stuff, or just prefer the 'feel' of traditional camber skis.

Extruded Base: This durable material requires little maintenance and holds wax for a long period of time, so you don't have to wax as often.

Our friend Rich has made an informative video series on teaching young children to ski. Labelled coincidentally enough teachchildrenskiing.com it's useful to those of you with skiers you would like to introduce to the sport.

Can't beat this package or L9Review by Shonji

Bought this package for our 6yr old last season. Based on her loving both the skis and boots so much, and especially after facing a $130 equipment rental price for our 4 yr old for a weeklong trip, instead we doubled down and bought another package.

The pride our daughters they take in owning their own skis is not only super cute, it makes a big difference in how they think about skiing and their relationship to the sport. On receiving the latest package, the older one said to the younger one, "now you're a real skier just like me!" :)

Last, since both are using the smallest size setting for the boots, Mom and Dad love the fact that these boots will fit them for several years at least. The boot design is brilliant. Can't imagine anyone buying fixed sized boots for their young ones if they're aware of this innovation. (Posted on 2/28/2017)
Awesome kids skisReview by Chi

This is our second season on these skis. The kids were 4 and 6 when they started, and the tip of the skis came to their nose. Now they are 5 and 7, and the skis come to the top of their chest. The bindings were originally adjusted pretty loose, so they kept popping off, so I readjusted them a little tighter, and then a little tighter against this year because they're a little bigger. The boots are comfy. The skis and bindings seem pretty high quality for kids stuff. It's definitely worth it if you ski more than a few times a year. We did about 20 days of skiing last year, and we'll probably do about 15 this year. (Posted on 2/6/2017)

I purchased this package for my 7 year old daughter. Everything arrived early and we were able to ski a couple of days after. She loves the boots and skis, very comfy and stylish. I expect her to get at least 2 seasons from the boots as she's at the smallest setting. Great value for money with excellent service. (Posted on 1/25/2017)

Our daughter has six days on these skis having spent the week skiing the hills of Aspen. They worked very well for him in various conditions including six inches of powder. The fit was good. L9 led us through the sizing process which turned out to be perfect. (Posted on 1/22/2017)

Santa left these under the tree for my 6 year old daughter. The day after Christmas, we put them to the test for her first time skiing. They were a great fit for her. I feared her feet would be uncomfortable the first time in ski boots, but she said they felt good and never complained for the 6 hours we were skiing! These are a good, solid pair of skis for a new skier, and I'm excited that the boots will grow with her for a couple of seasons (before her little sister gets them). Level Nine customer service is great too. Initially, they shipped the wrong product, but had bindings mounted on a new set of skis and had them to my house on the east coast within 2 days of being notified of the mistake. I'll be a repeat customer! (Posted on 12/28/2016)

Great package! I bought these for my 9 year old daughter and they are perfect. Quality is great and they look even cuter in person. The team at Levelnine was fantastic to work with. They set everything up and touched base with me a few times in a 24 hour period to ensure the order was correct. Quick to ship as well. Thanks for the awesome customer service and products! Skis and boots are an amazing value. I was a bit nervous buying Defiance skis because I couldn't find any online reviews but very glad I took the risk. My seven year old daughter has skied four days on these skis. Boots are great as well. Cannot beat the price as the adjustment is included as well. Just know you'll have to input exact height and weight in comment box for smaller kids. (Posted on 1/20/2015)
