2016 Gear in Review

Here at Level Nine, we like to get outside and use the stuff we sell. We're a pretty active group, so we've taken a lot of turns and used a lot of ski, snowboard and bike gear during 2016. Naturally, we have some opinions about it and wanted to share some of our favorites. A few of our employees have shared their thoughts below. Check it out and give the gear a try for yourself!

Under Armour Nimbus Shell Men’s Bib Pants

Under Armour Nimbus Shell Men's Bib Pants

After tearing my favorite bibs that I had been wearing for four ski seasons, I was concerned I would not be able to find a replacement that I liked as much. Luckily, I found the Under Armour Nimbus bibs. The Gore-Tex material is the pinnacle of waterproofing and breathability, so I know I will be protected from the elements. But the reason I really love these bibs is their well-thought-out feature set. The dual chest pockets are perfectly placed to keep my phone and wallet safe and out of the way while skiing, and the knee pockets are nice and easy to access while on the chairlift -- great for my handkerchief and trail map. The extra wide straps are very comfortable, and the waist cinching system ensures a perfect fit. They are pretty pricey, but with L9's closeout deal, you can get some of the nicest pants on the market for half off the regular price.

Armada Victa 83 Women's Skis

Armada Victa 83 Women's Skis

I have the Armada Victa 83 skis with Tyrolia LX bindings. This is a great carving ski to charge down groomed runs. The ski handles great under high speeds and is super fun to bomb hills with. It's an easy ski for carving, holds an edge great, and also handles well in some powder.

Salomon SPLIT Split Snowboard with Skins

Salomon SPLIT Split Snowboard with Skins

Talk about bang for your buck! This split board is such a wicked deal since it includes pre-cut skins. I’ve used a few other split boards in the past, and I always wanted the board to perform more like my solid resort board. And this board does the trick. It is surfy and super fun but can charge at the same time.

Camelbak Eddy Kids' Water Bottle

Camelbak Eddy Kids' Water Bottle

I love the Eddy water bottles for my 5 year old because they hold more liquid than most sippy cups, and they never leak. The design is easy enough for him to close by himself, which is a big deal! Not only are they super cute, but they’re dishwasher safe. People are always asking where we get them, and I, of course, tell them L9 Sports!

Giro Montaro MIPS MTB Helmet

Giro Montaro MIPS MTB Helmet

The Giro Montaro MIPS mountain bike helmet is the best bike helmet I have ever used. It is lightweight and adjustable, so it is extremely comfortable. Ample ventilation and a sun visor that can be moved up and out of the way ensure that this helmet is appropriate in all weather conditions. The MIPS technology gives me peace of mind knowing I have the latest advances in head protection. On only my fourth time out with the helmet, I took a tumble and bonked my head a bit, but with this helmet I was totally protected.

Armada JJ 2.0 Skis

Armada JJ 2.0 Skis

The Armada JJ 2.0 is one of the most fun and versatile skis I have ever owned. The shape of the ski lends itself to almost any condition. Camber underfoot gives them great edge grip on firm snow and hardpack, while the rocker in the tips and tails allows them to float effortlessly in softer snow. The skis have a nice medium flex, which give them a playful and surfy feel. So far this season I have skied them on everything from groomers to fresh powder, and they have handled it all with ease. The JJs feature Armada's early taper design in the tips, which makes turn initiation super easy and keeps the tips from getting hooky in choppy snow. I would recommend the JJ 2.0 to anyone looking for a ski that can tackle anything on the mountain.

Salomon Faction Boa Snowboard Boots

Salomon Faction Boa Snowboard Boots

Jumping back into the snowboard scene after a decade break, I knew I needed some upgrades in gear, and new boots were at the top of my list. The Salomon Faction did not disappoint. These boots are light years beyond what I was used to riding. The BOA closure system is absolutely amazing, allowing me to keep the boots at just the right tightness during my entire time at the resort. Being able to take them on and off with a quick pull of the dial helps in getting my tired feet out after a long day shredding Utah powder. I would definitely recommend these boots to anyone looking to upgrade or thinking of trying out the Boa system.

Scott MTN Free 15 GT PL 3-Finger Mittens

Scott MTN Free 15 GT PL 3-Finger Mittens

I love these 3-finger gloves from Scott. I am a fan of leather gloves, and the 3-finger design provides the warmth of a mitten with some extra tactility of a glove. I have used these on three very cold days, and my hands didn't get cold at all! I can definitely see these lasting for the next three seasons without fail.

Launch Pad Ski Trainer Harness

Launch Pad Ski Trainer Harness

Teaching your children to ski is hard work... But it’s also awesome! Just getting to the mountain and to the top of the lift is an accomplishment. So my advice is to get all the right gear so it’s not harder than it needs to be. This little trainer harness is killer for my two-and-a-half-year-old. It’s sort of like holding the reins on a horse; you basically get to steer them left and right. And you can also stop them, which is good, too. It has stretchable shock-absorbing material in the leashes that brings them to a slow stop. This allows them to fall over and cry more gracefully. My little girl seems to not be bothered at all by it, and I love it. And you also get to yell, “Yeehaw little cowgirl!”
