Alpine objectives that blend skiing, ice climbing, and technical movement do not have room for a pack that gets in the way, and the Osprey Packs Mutant 38L Backpack was designed around that principle from the first stitch. Every feature on this pack exists because a serious alpine climber needed it on a serious objective, and everything that did not make that cut was left off intentionally.

Osprey built the Mutant 38 around a streamlined 210D and 420D nylon construction with a removable Atilon sheet lamination and HDPE top stay that balance structure and load management without adding unnecessary weight to a light-and-fast mission. The 3-point haul system distributes the pack's weight evenly across three anchor points when you clip off on a multi-pitch route, keeping the load stable whether it is being hauled up a pitch or left hanging at a belay station. A-frame ski carry locks skis securely to the outside of the pack for approach terrain and ridge traverses, ice tool locks stow a full set of tools safely against the pack body, and waist belt gear loops keep frequently accessed equipment clipped and within reach while you are on the wall. A helmet carry attachment handles the approach with a climbing helmet out of the way, two zippered lid pockets organize small essentials, and the fixed waist belt and laminated EVA shoulder straps keep the pack close to the body through the sustained, dynamic movement that technical alpine days demand.
